The Philippines and Brunei were two of the ASEAN Member States featured at the ASEAN Women’s Circle of Jakarta (AWC) ASEAN Education Day held in April.

Part of AWC's ongoing efforts to raise awareness on ASEAN as well as strengthen friendship and deepen commitment as part of one ASEAN community, ASEAN Education Day sees the ladies of AWC visiting a selected school to talk about ASEAN and their respective countries to the students.

On 9 April 2015, Mrs. Dorothy Novicio of the Philippines and Mrs. Lydia Zamain of Brunei talked about their respective countries to more than 60 primary school students and teachers in a two-hour presentation at Yayasan AI Ikhwan. The presentation covered the history of ASEAN, its founding members, member states, their people, flags, capitals and iconic landmarks.

Mrs. Zamain and Mrs. Novicio expounded on the history, current government, language, famous landmarks, tourist destinations, food and games and a lot of interesting trivia about Brunei and the Philippines. One of the highlights and most interactive parts of the lesson was teaching Filipino and Bruneian words and phrases to the children.

To their delight, the students discovered a lot of similar words in Filipino, Bahasa Indonesia and Bahasa Melayu. A question and answer portion in the form of a game ensued after the lesson, with prizes awarded to the top three winners.

At the end of the activity, the students and teachers were presented with souvenir caps from ASEAN, and homemade goodies from the the two countries which the children loved. The top three winners of the quiz received a special stationery set from ASEAN which was presented by Mrs. Ugi Pramono, AWC President. Also present during the visit were members of the AWC Executive Committee: former AWC President Mrs. Sabai Win, Mrs. Swi Swajaya, Mrs. Rus Puja, Mrs. Mita Mochtan and Mrs. Ana Wicaksono.

The students and teachers bade the AWC ladies goodbye with their heartwarming and newly learned expressions of “thank you, salamat po and terima kasih."
